Shore power solution for tanker vessels
NG3

Flying Plug allows tanker vessels to connect to shore power at the aft of the vessel, away from the potentially hazardous cargo area and close to the main switch board.

It is based on the well-proven Plug self-mating/de-mating connector technology, used for more than a decade on numerous ro-pax vessels.

One of the main challenges is that a tanker’s position during cargo operation is determined by the midship cargo manifold connection with the terminal, which means the aft vessel position may vary with the vessel’s size and is away from the shoreside. The Flying Plug is therefore based on using one of the vessel’s mooring lines to support a set of dollies that bring the connector and its power cables toward the vessel where the connection can be established.

Operations are ‘hands off’ and require only one crew member and one terminal operator. Connection/disconnection takes a few minutes, without any interference with the cargo manifold operations.

On the ship side, the Flying Plug interface is compact and low weight; the quay-side interface is a simple add-on to the existing mooring point, avoiding any significant harbor engineering.

From a safety point of view, the solution offers the required emergency release capability; power exchange capabilities are up to 13MVA under 11kV, although a 1kV 2,000A configuration is available to connect smaller vessels at their main switch board voltage, avoiding the need for an onboard step-down transformer. It meets all the IEC 80005 and OCIMF functional requirements.
