Kelvin Ellis

Kelvin is the account supervisor in the customer success department of San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), one of Sempra’s California-regulated utilities. He manages a group of nine account executives assigned to the largest commercial, industrial and municipal customers. The account supervisor role also has assigned accounts, managing the San Diego International Airport, the Port District of San Diego, several of the Port tenants and the Energy Generator customers who sell power on the wholesale market. Kelvin joined SDG&E in 2001, with a majority of the time spent in project management implementing various energy efficiency and renewable energy generation projects. He also spent time in the Distributed Energy Resource group, managing research projects on the impact of renewables on the electric distribution grid. Kelvin currently serves on the board of the San Diego Working Waterfront Group and is the president of the Black Employees Business Resource Group. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern University of Baton Rouge, LA and is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and licensed Engineer In Training (EIT).

Crowley's eWolf at Port of San Diego: the United States' first electric tug

Crowley's eWolf is a project at the Port of San Diego which includes an electric tugboat, microgrid, and landside charging infrastructure. This presentation brings together key members of the project team to discuss what it took to bring this innovative idea to reality. Thomas MacLean from Port of San Diego will direct the presentation. Paul Manzi from Crowley Shipping will speak about how the concept for the eWolf came to fruition. Zach Birmingham will provide the perspective of the Port, and Kelvin Ellis from the utility San Diego Gas and Electric will provide insight into utility considerations. Following the presentations, these technical experts and organizational representatives from the maritime, engineering, utility, and government sectors will get together and take questions from the audience and discuss this unique endeavor to deliver the United States' first electric tugboat.
