The Carabinieri, one of Italy’s four armed forces, continues to enjoy great success with its new FSD N800 HY patrol boats, 20 of which have been ordered from Ferretti Security Division.

The FSD N800 HYs are the first hybrid patrol boats to join the Carabinieri’s fleet, and are being deployed to patrol coastal and territorial waters for rescue and security operations. They are equipped with a new-generation hybrid propulsion system that offers a simple-to-use mode that allows switching from diesel to electric and vice versa. The hybrid function guarantees a substantial reduction in emissions and greater care for the environment.

Each patrol boat is 16.75m long, with a beam of 4.43m and a draft of 1.57m, featuring a hull constructed of composite materials including glass and carbon fiber.

The boats are powered by Transfluid’s HM3350 parallel hybrid systems, integrated with Transfluid’s PM electric motors and LiFePO4 batteries. The complete system is DNV-GL type approved. In electric mode, the boats can cruise for approximately one hour at 7kts and two hours at 5kts; they have a maximum speed of 8kts and, in diesel mode, 30kts. While in diesel mode, complete recharging of the batteries is completed in about 90 minutes. In addition to saving fuel, the electric mode reduces the overall maintenance costs because it reduces the amount of time that the diesel engines are operated.
