Ferry operator Boreal Sjø and technology group Wärtsilä have agreed to work together to develop hydrogen-powered ferries.
The agreement, which is part of the Norwegian Government’s plan to be the first country to own a hydrogen-powered ferry, will see the two companies develop a hydrogen-electric ferry with a 50-50 power split, and one fully electric ferry. The hydrogen-electric ferry will, according to Boreal Sjø, be the first vessel of its size ever to be powered by hydrogen for commercial operation.
Upon completion in 2021, both vessels will commence operation on Norway’s Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route.
