ABB to power Japan’s first electric tugboat

ABB to power Japan’s first electric tugboat

Power system specialist ABB has been contracted by IHI Power Systems to develop an electric tug for the ports of Tokyo Bay for Japanese towage specialist Tokyo Kisen.

The new-build tug will feature ABB’s award-winning power system platform, Onboard DC Grid, and will be the first vessel of its kind to operate in Japan. The vessel, set to be named Taiga, is the result of a collaboration between Tokyo Kisen and e5 Lab, a Japanese consortium which plans and develops fully electric vessels.

The Taiga is under construction at the Kanagawa Dockyard in Kobe and is due for delivery by the end of December 2022.

Partnership to develop hybrid heavy transport vessel for offshore wind farms

Partnership to develop hybrid heavy transport vessel for offshore wind farms

Vallianz has joined forces with Ulstein Design & Solutions, Shift Clean Energy and Bureau Veritas to collaborate on the design and construction of a heavy transport vessel (HTV) that will be the first of its kind in the global offshore wind industry.

Designed for worldwide operations, the HTV will be deployed for the transportation of structures such as monopiles, jackets, transition pieces and turbine blades to support offshore wind farm projects, as well as heavy structure modules for LNG and carry out floatover operations of offshore structures. Featuring zero-emission capability, the DP-2 vessel will be the first of its kind, as it will be driven by a hybrid power system consisting of alternative dual-fueled engines and a fully classed battery energy storage system.

BW LPG carriers complete dual-fuel retrofits

BW LPG carriers complete dual-fuel retrofits

BW LPG has announced that it has converted the main engine of the BW Malacca to dual-fuel running. The last such conversion for a series of 15 LPG carriers, the ship’s MAN B&W 6G60ME-C9.2 type engine was retrofitted to an MAN B&W 6G60ME-C9.5-LGIP dual-fuel type capable of operating on fuel oil and LPG.

The work was carried out at Yiu Lian Dockyards in Shenzhen, China, in conjunction with the vessel’s scheduled, five-year docking and under the supervision of MAN PrimeServ, MAN Energy Solutions’ after-sales division. The BW Malacca has since passed sea trials.

“We could not have accomplished this ambitious project on our own,” said Pontus Berg, executive vice president (Technical) at BW LPG.

Samskip and Ocean Infinity secure funding for hydrogen-fueled container ship

A project named SeaShuttle has secured €15m (US$15.8m) in funding from Norwegian state enterprise ENOVA. The project will see two hydrogen-powered, remotely controlled and autonomous-ready containerships being built for delivery by 2025.

The scheme, led by multimodal transportation and logistics group Samskip and marine robotics company Ocean Infinity, will see the pair of SeaShuttle ships serve a route between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam, each powered by a 3.2MW hydrogen fuel cell for emission-free sailing.

Announced in April 2022, the partnership between Samskip and Ocean Infinity covers the construction and the operation of both ships. Through the collaboration the duo aims to accelerate a transition toward zero-emission, efficient and safe multimodal logistics.
